TESTIMONIES

Meet Clément BOBOTO, a brave and resilient 13-year-old from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Life has presented him with challenges, but his strength shines through despite adversity.

 

Born in Kinshasa to an unknown father and having lost his mother at a tender age of 9, Clément's journey has been marked by hardship. According to the Kongo tradition, his maternal uncle was expected to care for him after his mother's passing, and they lived together. Unfortunately, their cohabitation was fraught with difficulties, and eventually, his uncle forced him out of the house, leaving young Clément with nowhere to turn.

 

In his time of desperation, Clément sought refuge with compassionate neighbors for a couple of days. Recognizing the young boy's predicament, he was eventually led to the HOPE WORLD FOUNDATION orphanage in February 2023, where he sought admission. Initially hesitant to reveal the depth of his struggles, Clément's courage grew over time, and he opened up to the foundation about being hermaphrodite, possessing both male and female sex organs.

 

Tragically, his uncle had rejected him upon discovering this aspect of his identity, believing it would bring misfortune to the family. However, within the warm embrace of the HOPE WORLD FOUNDATION, Clément found acceptance and psychosocial support. Surrounded by care and compassion, he flourished, just like any other child, gaining newfound self-confidence along the way.

 

Presently, Clément is diligently pursuing his education in the 6th year of primary school and making great progress. Yet, his medical condition requires urgent intervention to prevent complications arising from the development of both male and female organs. Specialized treatments tailored to his unique needs are available in well-equipped hospitals with expert staff, but regrettably, such facilities are scarce in the DRC.

With a heavy heart, I share my story, introducing myself as ZAWADI Jacqueline, a devoted mother and widow. Four years ago, I lost my beloved husband, and since then, life has been an uphill battle as I care for my family of eight orphans. In the past, my husband provided for us abundantly, and our lives were filled with joy and prosperity. Our children had everything they needed – proper food, clothing, and education. Our home was a warm and welcoming place, with visitors gracing us regularly.

 

However, life's circumstances have taken a toll, and it feels like our happiness has been taken away from us. The weight of my responsibilities has become overwhelming, and making ends meet has become a constant struggle. Providing for my children's education, in particular, has become a significant burden. To survive, I have started a small business selling embers in the neighborhood, but it is not enough to cover all our expenses.

 

While I cherish my children, I must admit that the challenges have been immense. I long for the days when their presence brought sheer joy rather than hardships. I am reaching out to those with kind hearts who can extend a helping hand in this trying time. My dream is to expand my business and generate enough income to meet our crucial needs. If I can achieve this goal, my children will have the opportunity to study like any other children, and witnessing their growth and success will fill my heart with happiness.

My heart goes out to you as I introduce myself as KANDI MUSHAGALUSA, a 12-year-old girl living in the Nyakaliba district of Kadutu in Bukavu, DRC. My life has been marked by tragedy and hardship, and I carry the weight of painful memories with me.

 

I lost my beloved father in a senseless act of violence, taken away by heartless gunmen just a few meters from our home. The trauma of that day still haunts me, and the insecurity caused by former militiamen continues to cast a shadow over our family's life, leaving us in constant fear.

 

The loss of my father has deeply affected our family's wellbeing. My mother, burdened with the responsibility of raising seven children on her own, faces health issues brought on by the stress of our situation. Our financial struggles have led to my inability to continue my education beyond a certain point. While my friends and neighbors pursue their studies, I feel envious as I sit at home, unable to afford the school fees.

 

Despite my academic potential, I had to halt my education, except for my elder brother, whose studies continued thanks to my father's foresight in building us a home. However, my mother's health now prevents her from working, putting even more strain on our already heavy load.

 

In this difficult time, I humbly reach out to the kind-hearted individuals who can support me in returning to school and pursuing an education like any other child. I firmly believe that education is the key to unlocking dreams and potential, and I do not want to miss out on the opportunities it offers. Without it, I fear that my future may be uncertain and full of challenges.
